Flatiron Law Group LLP lawyers have deep subject matter expertise in clean energy, often acquired from within the industry. Greg Chin co-founded the cleantech practice at Latham & Watkins (an Amlaw 5 firm) and served as the global co-chair of the cleantech industry group. Mark Haddad was the co-chair of the global project finance practice at Jones Day (another Amlaw 5 firm) for eight years and chair of the renewable energy practice.
Conrad Everhard served for many years as the general counsel and as a senior member of the management team of AE Polysilicon Corporation, a venture-backed solar photovoltaic company that developed an innovative process for the production of polysilicon using fluidized bed reactor (FBR) technology. AEP raised more than $200 million from several strategic investors, including, principally, TOTAL Petrochemicals, the French-based global energy conglomerate and Motech Industries, a Taiwan-based top ten solar cell manufacturer. During his tenure at AEP, Conrad oversaw all aspects of AEP's legal and financing activities.
Between them, our lawyers have decades of combined senior leadership experience in the cleantech, and more sector experience than can be found at many global law firms.
Our cleantech practice encompasses all apsects of our clients’ life cycles, including entity choice and formation, capital raising, technology development and EPC / O&M. We have negotiated complex technology collaboration agreements and commercialization joint ventures for our cleantech clients. We have especially strong relationships in the cleantech sectors in China and Taiwan, where we have represented buyers and U.S.-bound investors. We also represent a European-based energy conglomerate in all of its U.S. based biofuel investments.
In the cleantech sector, we have also been actively engaged in project development and finance, particularly in the emerging markets, representing primarily sponsors and borrowers. In acting for sponsors, we have been involved in projects from early stage technical and economic assessments to development, financing and implementation. We are adept at addressing financing considerations and the particular commercial concerns and economic objectives of each sponsor within the consortium. As the market evolved, our experience has included the use of structured finance techniques (securitizations and asset monetization through the use of derivatives), portfolio acquisitions, infrastructure funds and restructurings.
